Miskwabik, the Ojibway
word for copper, has played a significant role throughout
my life.
Golden Hawk, my great
grandfather (an Ojibway from the Great Lakes basin), worked
with Miskwabik in both the native pits and European owned
mines in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. The teachings passed
down through my Grandmother have held a special place of
importance in my life.
Working the copper, the way of my ancestors, using an open
pit fire for annealing and a stone
for a hammer, brings honor and humility to me. It gives
me a gift of knowing
the ways of the first people.
